Onions are a cool weather crop. Unless the ground freezes solid you should have onions in the spring! You can cut the tops if you want too, but I would leave them, they are feeding the bulb.

I'm in zone 7 and always plant onions and garlic in Oct. Then pull them at the start of summer, when they die back or when I just need some. They will sprout greens before the real cold weather sets in, frost doesn't hurt them.

Thanks wertach. Do I need to mulch them or anything in particular? I was planning on topping off my raised bed they are in with more soil and compost this fall, but I suppose I can leave them alone so as to not bury them too deep. Looks like I have zombie onions, just in time for Halloween! LOL!

You can transplant them if you want, so you don't bury them too deep. They should have plenty of time to recover.
