I've done it by accident. I had some tiny bulbs that I grew from seed (direct seeded, so they didn't have time to grow big enough). The next spring they came up happy and green. My neighbor at the community garden also did it, she didn't pull her bulbs and they came up next year very nicely too. They all went to seed though.

Yup, Planted onion sets in Indianapolis late one fall probably about this time. They picked up where they left at when the snow hit. I do recall the roots were really deep and had to shovel them out instead of pulling them.

I'm in southern WI, and have Egyptian Walking,
Yellow Potato and a Scallion, var. unk, that all overwinter very nicely. The Scallion does flower and set seed, if I let it, and the Egyptian make their top sets. The Yellow Potato is a plant, overwinter and dig kind, like Garlic. Are you looking to perenialize them or get them to produce seed?

I am trying to get them to produce seed... I have a White Spanish, a Sweet Yellow, and Cipolla Ramata Milano...

I have already pulled them up... but I guess I could try to replant a couple of each and see what happens.

I'm not familiar with the varieties you list, but if they are heirloom or open polenated they will come true from seed. Either way, worth a shot. Store your already dug and cured onions between 35 and 42 degrees to keep them dormant. When your planting time comes around pull them out and allow to sprout. Replant them in the garden and they should produce flower stalks and subsequently seed. Onions are a biennial and in the first year will produce the storage structure, and in the second year the seed producing structure.

If you have enough, I would try planting one or two in the garden and see how they over winter. I love a good garden experiment! Good luck!
