Season length and day length

So, now that I finally think I'm understanding how this whole day length stuff works, I open up my freshly-arrived Stokes seed catalogue, ready to pick out the best long-day onion they've got, and behold... there is no mention of day length in the descriptions at all; they're categorized by season (early, second early, main and late). Since this is a Canadian seed catalogue, can I just assume that they would only sell long-day onions or... does early mean short-day and late mean long-day (which doesn't make sense, but I'm asking anyway). Help!

For reference, I live at 52ÃÂN and get about 17 hours of sunlight (calculating from sunrise to sunset hoping that's how it's figured) on June 21. I've never been able to plant before mid May (garden is sloppy clay) and we (usually) get our first frosts in early September.
