Sweet White Onions - extending season

Where I live (Christchurch, New Zealand) you cannot buy these onions, so I am growing my own Sweet Walla Walla, and am looking forward to my first harvest in a couple of months. However I have read that like all sweet onions they will only store for about 4 months, which means that I will be without them for the other 8 months. Is there any way around this? Are there other sweet varieties that store better? Does anyone have any tips to prolong the storage life? If I sow a late crop they will not bulb up but are they eatable over the winter as scallions? How about giving them a half hour of artificial light at midnight, a trick that I believe carnation growers use to stimulate flowering? I would appreciate any advice. Christchurch is about Lat. 43S
