Growth habit of Walla Walla

Because one of my sweet walla walla onions was starting to sprout, I planted it out this spring (it is early summer now here in New Zealand) hoping to get seed for next year. Instead of a single plant growing up, the bulb casing has split and five separate plants are emerging, a bit like a shallot. Is this normal? Will each plant eventually flower? Should I separate the plants or just leave them? Any advice would be appreciated.

| Onions will divide after their first year. When they flower they'll also form a new bulb on the side of the old bulb that dies after flowering. I've mainly seen them divide in two, but different types will behave differently, and damage to the bulb or some kind of growth deformity may also result in a plant that grows in unusual ways. |
