I bought this from Gurneys. My first attempt at garlic growing. Has anyone tried this garlic? How is the taste? And what's the different benefits/problems between soft and hardneck? My plants are coming up already.

alan8,

I had some Silver Rose this year, about 60. I like the variety being a larger bulb than the similar Nootka Rose..it's a very pretty bulb when you get down to the bottom two wrappers.
I don't recall the flavor of the Silver Rose but will guess that it's again similar to Nootka. I just ate a clove of Nootka to remind me and it's mild yet spicy, not too much heat.

Softneck bulbs store the longest and have a milder flavor. IMO. You say your cloves have sprouted already, they must have been in the ground for at least three-four weeks then and must have good soil temps. this is common, don't worry.

If it's getting cold where you are then I advise you to get some sort of mulch over the row of young plants to protect them from the cold. This will also act as a blanket to keep at least some of the heat in the soil.

The link below is not my site but is a site I go to regularly for information about most anything garlic.
