My garlic is already growing well

Posted by georgia_transplant 8 (My Page) on

I planted Inchelium Red garlic several weeks ago and it has been nice and warm here. The little green tops are now peeking through the soil.

Is this a problem? Should I trim the tops or leave them alone? My instinct says no, but I'm still pretty new at this and I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance.

DO NOT cut on your plants. you planted a little early for your climate but what's done is done. The plants will be ok left alone. make sure they have enough water though.

Bloosquall, It is not early here in zone 8 GA. Actually it is a bit late. I have been planting garlics starting as early as early September and some couple of weeks ago.
Garlics will overwiner here fine. by early next june they will be ready. Plus, you can reach and pull some up in the winter and enjoy fresh young garlic greens. They are fall cool crops here. So are onions, leeks and shallots.

I was a little worried too when I saw my garlic was already growing, but it turns out they're supposed to do that.

Interestingly, the softnecks took off first, almost right after I planted them. The hardnecks waited a while, but now they're starting to sprout too.

NeoHippie --

I hope your garlic is looking great. I would agree with cyrus_gardner, not to cut the plants and that Nov 1 is not too early to plant garlic in the South. I personally shoot for Oct 1 +/- a week to plant and I live in Raleigh, NC.

Here is another tip, Now is a great time to ensure you have your beds are nicely mulched and now is the time of the year I give my plants a complete soaking with water mixed with 2-3 Tablespoons of fish fertilizer. It really helps the plants perk up and send out new green leaves. I don't fertilize anymore, just this once.

Please post around June if you have any questions about harvesting or curing your garlic.

RE: My garlic is already growing well

Well, here we are, early April, 2010.
My garlics are doing fantastically. Some have stems thicker than an ince.
I have been pulling one, now and then, and using as fresh young garlic.
Now I see that they are growing more leaves and getting taller.
Some are as tall as 2 feet. Garlics are very easy to grow and care for.
Once in a while I sprinkle a bit of 10-10-10 for them.
And now that it is getting warm, no rain for a while, I will water them.
In hard dry soil the bulbs will have hard time to expand.
Happy gardening, all
