What happens if you plant short day onions in Zone 4?

My dad got some red onion seeds from China for us to try. Unfortunately, I think they are the wrong day for Zone 4/5a. The packet says to plant in October/November, which suggests to me that they are short day onions(?), while I've read that long-day onions planted in May may be more suitable for our climate.

Despite that, I hate to see the seeds go to waste. What happens if you plant short day onions in the north? Do they just never bulb up? Or do they bulb up too quickly, before enough leaves have developed? Is it worth planting them to just eat the onion leaves (like scallions) regardless of whether they bulb? I've never planted onions before so would value any advice.

Thanks,
