Did I get ripped off for Allium 'Gladiator' bought on clearance?

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and to Gladiators. I bought two 'Gladiator' bulbs on clearance from Van Bourgondien and I recieved them today, but I am a little concerned.

They are two different shapes - one taller, one shorter and rounder. They are supposed to be 18-20 cm, but when I measured the circumference, they are morel ike 14-16 cm. Should I bother with returning them? I only paid like $3.00 for both of them.

Will they get bigger next year (the bulbs). Like, If i plant them this year and care for them well, will the bulbs increase to their normal 18-20 cm next year? They don't seem big enough to make the flower I see in all the pictures

Also, notice how the taller one looks like it was cut in half, but I think maybe it had split into two, and I got one half. The other is shorter and so I'm not even sure it is the same cultivar/species of Allium - what do you think?

Also, which end is the top? There is a strange substance on the sides of the taller one, can you see it in the picture? It's not wet or anything - its just there.

I've never grown Alliums before, so any advice would be appreciated!!

I have no idea what a gladiator is. do you see where the roots were on those bulbs ??? that's the bottom. I had some Korean cloves that looked worse than that when I got them, I planted them and they grew just fine. Plant them, they will grow.

I believe this forum is mostly for garlic and onion growers. It should be called the Edible Allium Forum. Anyway, I have found that some of the large allium flower bulbs such as Gladiator don't produce big flowers for very many years. The flowers seem to get smaller every year. I would highly recommend A. Globemaster as it produces a large flower every year, doesn't set seed. but the bulb does divide in half, so you get two bulbs the next year. In my neck of the woods (southern Ontario Canada) they sell for $10-12 each, and are available for sale in the fall.

Gladiator vs. Globemaster

Your Gladiator bulbs don't look that great, but then you didn't pay very much for them either. I would definitely plant them and see what you get in the spring. They may or may not be the same , i.e. true Gladiator plants. In the fall look for Globemaster.

Here is a link that might be useful: alliums Gladiator and Globemaster

Possibly make some homemade fungicide and spray the plant and some of the ground after the plant has been well established. It may have had a fungus.
