pH of potting mix?

I'm going to seed some dianthus and some leontopodium (edelweiss) indoors soon. Should I be concerned about the pH of the potting mix for these plants which like alkaline soil?

Do you have a favourite potting mix for your alpines?

I see now there are a couple of threads dealing with related issues so will follow those. Still if anybody can give me the short answer to my first question I'd appreciate it :). I have no access here to limestone grit (which is very slow-acting anyway isn't it?) but we're surrounded by gypsum....

Almost all lime "loving" plants are quite happy in soil with little or no lime. It is the other way round that causes the problems. Neutral soil is OK for everything except those plants that demand acid soils.

Brian thanks. I won't worry, though it does lead me to wonder and want to learn more.
