What will work in north side of tree zone 4?

I am replacing a mini hardy geranium with more rock garden plants in a dry area where I have semps. on the south side of the tree.

Any thought of what might work there?

Thanks so much,

Lynn in MN

your title says "north side of the tree" and your message says"south side of the tree". Which is it, and how much direct sun does it get? Don't say how many hours. Tell me: half day-full day-quarter day...

Rick, the semperverniums are on the south side of the tree area. The other side of the tree - north side is where I am trying to decide what to put there.

The space gets indirect sun for maybe half a day at the most.
It is a small area, approximately 2 ft. width.
    Thanks for any thoughts.

If you like the sempervivums, I think the Jovibarba heuffelii cultivars will work better where there is more shade. Woodland wildflowers in general should do fine. Things like Thalictrum thalictroides, Uvularia grandiflora, Anemone species, Hepatica americana and H. acutiloba, Iris cristata. Also, any Epimedium species and other Thalictrum species would do well.

So would Sedums. They grow one on one with moss here and even on rocks.

    Here is an example.
We have dry summers. This is not under irrigation.
