Interesting information RE: growing mediums and water alkalinity

I've run into a bit of a problem with some of my seedlings turning yellow and dying once I started watering them with our city water. Which is the typically HARD water of the western US.

After posting on Alpine-L it was suggested that the hardness of the water was reacting with the peat based medium that I used. So, I did some googling and found this link with very useful information.

Thought that others might be able to use this as well.

    Yes, quite interesting. I never knew ions with a valence of one reacted quicker than others with higher valences.

    And this:
    In general, water alkalinity is more important in determining effects on substrate pH than the actual pH of water.
    I had forgotten about completely!
