Dianthus gratianopolitanus 'Tiny Rubies' in trough

I've heard this Dianthus will take over a trough. I'm thinking of devoting a single 12" diameter round trough to one plant, and putting a few small rocks in the trough to create some visual variety. Do you think this plant will ultimately flow around the rocks, or will they arrest its spread?

I have this plant in a trough that measures 12 inches x 18 inches. The tiny rubies is hanging more over the side then trying to compete with the other plants. It blooms beautifully and looks very sweet with the other plants and rocks.

If they start to flow over the rocks, just pull that part out, this is a very easy plant to control.

Thanks for the information! What other plants do you have in the trough with the Tiny Rubies?

Sempervivum, Juniperis x media 'Shimpaku', Tiarella, and an Elfin Thyme.

Aren't troughs fun. I am addicted to troughs and alpines.

That sounds like a wonderful combination. Yes, I know what you mean about troughs -- who wouldn't like a portable miniature garden?
