Sedum for Outdoor Eastern Facing Window Sill in NYC

Posted by nyccoconut 6 (My Page) on

Hello!

I would like to plant Sedum or an Alpine on my windowsill. I am looking for a plant that:

• Can stand up to direct Eastern exposure (no buildings blocking the morning sun)
• Is modern/architectural/minimal
• Will withstand the year-round heat and cold on a NYC windowsill

Would anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!
Jeff

RE: Sedum for Outdoor Eastern Facing Window Sill in NYC

I have sedum in east facing, direct sun and it loves it. In fact I put some red stone around it this summer and the heat and reflected light has made the sedum fill in better than ever.

Last summer I put some cuttings in a shallow container and just left it out all winter. The thing must have frozen solid (I live upsate - Syracuse) and it all came back this summer.

For an architectural look you might look at Sedum Vera Jamison. It has a nice structure to the leaves. I also like Purple Palace, but it is an upright version and you have trim it back if you want to keep it from falling over late in the season.

Let me know if you want photos.
