Lily and Iris Rock Garden

I would like to create a rock garden of lilies and irises. The garden size is approximately 10 ft x 10 ft. I would like to plant iris and lily bulbs, leaving a large enough hole for future growth, and then sheet mulch (using cardboard) the unplanted areas and then cover the sheet mulch with rocks. Since irises and lilies usually spread, my guess is that the sheet mulch and weight of the rocks would prevent spreading. Would this harm any of my original irises and lilies? I haven't started the project yet. Thank you. Jane

The cardboard will eventually decompose which will leave you with rocks on top of soil. Iris spread quickly, you will need to lift and divide it every year to keep growth in check.

Obviously, your "rock garden" is not an alpine garden, but my concern is the soil you have, as most people (not alpine gardeners) use rock mulches over poor soils. Lilies especially need good rich and well draining soil. If your soil is sand or clay, lilies will not thrive.

Leftwood is right. Iris will grow anyway but the lilies will not do well.
