using a cold frame

Hi,just getting into alpines,not bothered about a greenhouse at the moment but have got two good used patio doors which I can use for cold frames or just to keep rain off a few containers and pots during the winter.They will be placed against a south facing brick wall during the winter.
I already have some rockeries but thought the cold frames might help to grow a few extra alpines that may not survive a wet english winter out in the open.
Any suggestions on any suitable varieties or methods would be appreciated.I do like semperviviums and any compatible plants.
Also am I correct in thinking that I would need a greenhouse to grow any of the gentians?
I live in the north of England in south yorkshire.
Cheers Rod...........
