Where to start with alpines?

I've started thinking about growing some more alpine plants (so far the only thing close to that that I am good with are Sempervivum, and I'm still working with Edelweiss). So my question is, where is a good place to start with them?

I know relatively little about culture of these plants. What I do know is that:

1) These plants like full sun, fast draining/poor soil, relatively cool temperatures (or at least in general).

2) They have deep roots.

Where did you guys start out? I dunno if I want to go as far as a cold frame, but I am considering it. And maybe I really shouldn't be getting myself into these plants, either. But I prolly should at least know what I /would/ be getting myself into.

Thanks,
-Ben

Your Public Library should have quite a few books you could check out.
Rock Gardens are very rewarding, and there are many clubs and groups you could join.
