Iam trying to breed a solid red with broad white margins.
This year I would be crossing these two with solid reds, Benfica & others.

With the complexity of the hippie gene pool is may be more difficult to attain your goal, but using these two varieties should get you there somewhat quicker. One must remember that hippies have been bred fro a hundred years and more so their lineage is very complex. Trying to "nail down" particular traits/patterns takes patience and great familiarity in the stock used for breeding. This is even more important since breeding records do not seem to be available for most of today's hybrids.

Using these two as foundation plants and even crossed with each other could get you there in only a few generations. Keep meticulous records of the crosses made and of the "get" from each cross. Use only those seedlings that approach your goal and cross them with each other as well as back to one or both of these two foundation plants. Watch the plant vigor is not lessened working two parallel lines will allow you to have two gene pools to work with that, while close are not directly related. Always be on the look out for "new stock" that comes close that you can add into your line(s) to add vigor and other qualities.

The two you are using are exceptionaly pretty.
Some times using a variety such as Picotee could be sucessful. The genes sometimes switch the color which is on the margins, with the main color.

Rebecca.
I totally agree with you. The result you get from a simple cross is un-imaginable. Perhaps that is the most interesting part of the game, every year you get something new.
