Re-invigorating my amaryllis

Hi all,
I just recently moved to Los Angeles (Zone 10) from Virginia (Zone 7A), and brought my much-loved amaryllis with me, hoping they would be able to make the transition. In late August of 2012, I cut back their leaves and pulled them from their pots, removed the dirt, and packed them up loosely for a cross-country ride in my car. Now, I'm hoping to be able to plant them and get a spring bloom. However, they look a little dried-up, and I'm worried they won't take. I have probably 8 good sized bulbs, and I planted one about a month ago to see what would happen, and it began putting up one leaf, but hasn't done much more than that. Also, I currently have it sitting in full sun on my porch, but maybe it needs to be moved indoors? Does anyone have any advice on how to make this endeavor more successful, or, should I scrap the process entirely?

Thanks.
