Broke off the bud!

Bought an Amaryllis bulb from HD, got it home, and accidentally broke off the bud stalk! But within a couple of weeks a new stalk grew out of the broken spot--and now has 4 lovely blooms. No sign whatsoever of the broken spot...anyone have a similar experience?

Most bulbs have more than 1 scape, usually 2 and occasionally 3 depending on the size of the bulb. The second scape that grew was already there and would have poped up and bloomed for you anyway..it did not replace the first one that you broke off..I hope you enjoyed your flowers...

If you break off a stalk, it will continue to develop and bloom in water. Just fill the inside of the stalk (it's hollow) and put your finger over the opening. Lower your hand into a tall vase of water and remove your finger. Change the water every 3-5 days. Many of us have even taken blooms to ripe seed pods this way.

As Kristi says..The inside of the amaryllis stalk is hollow.. like a straw.. and if you just stick the hollow stalk in water it might not be able to draw the water up the entirety of the stalk. Filling the stalk with water first and putting you finger on the bottom to stop the water from running out as you lower it in a vase of water assures that the water will reach the top of the stalk. Typically if you cut off an amaryllis stalk when it is blooming, a watery liquid will run out..

Now, if you have a very long stalk then every few days you should repeat this scenario by re-cutting the bottom a few inches and refilling with fresh water (stalk and vase)but, of course this is only applicable when you have a long stalk and if you've broken it of off up high, then you might mot be able to re-cut it..

If you don't cut it, it will turn red and curl up in a very interesting/attractive manner. At Keukenhof there were big vases filled with cut blooms and they used the curling as a decorative element...I found it actually added to the beauty of the arrangement.

And yes....fill with water! (should have said...fill with beans?) :-) Sorry...I knew what I meant, just skipped a step!

The curling doesn't bother me either, I kinda think it adds as well, some don't like it so they use rubber bands or somehow?
