Ambiance produces only 4 flowers per umbel, under my husbandry, and I wonder. Last year I was successful as that I evoked a rich seed production following pollination through PapDon1; (TET x TET). To my knowledge, the formation of viable seeds and, notably in abundance, was unheared of, out of this cultivar, previously, AM I RIGHT???!
For reasons not worth to be detailed here, I did not sow out anything last season, though. But, better news follows hard & swiftly *LOL* namely: I have just repeated the same crosspollination, on three umbels and TWELVE flowers of Ambiance, respectively.

Thank you for sharing your pictures, Fishing-Dentist!

    Frank,

These seedlings are very special to me. I never asked Hans-Werner to send them to me. To my surprise, he simply did, I think, because he knew my love and passion for them.

These are indeed very special and rare gift that I will treasure forever!!!!!

Frank, Another special and treasured gift, the second bloom of many to come on Melusine X PapDon2. I'm not sure if anyone other than Hans-Werner deserves this one. It is definitely his creation. I just nourished and treasured these jewels, and now, I have the priviledge of enjoying them.

    And she is working hard.
My one had 3 flowerstems with 5 to 6 flowers.
But now she is really exhausted and i need to feed her well for surviving.
Ann this is amazing and puts the otherone in the shadow.
Hans- Werner has a luck hand!

Thank you for the lovely pictures.
Hans was right I am living in an area which is too hot for the bulbs I love. April is the time they bloom and this year it is already 44C at noon. Some buds are drying up without oppening and the flower lasts for only three days. Every effort of mine to get early blooms has failed.
What cant be cured, must be endured.

  • dondeldux z6b South Shore Massachusetts

I sympathize with your plight, any chance for an air-condition sun/plant room for your favorites?!

  • elizabeth_jb

OH! Kristi! That is very good news. I do like Sweet Nymph!

Frank, I believe that Hans-Werner not only has luck, but he has hybridized for so long that he has sort of a sixth sense.

I will do my best to follow up on all the long years of hard work and dedication to hippeastrum, specifically Papilio.

I am thrilled with both of them, but yes, the second is my favorite.

Frank, greetings from SW Florida. Nice to meet you! I am an old return to the forum. Your photos are very beautiful. I love the way you made Exotica look like a shimmering prom gown and Sweet Nymph looks to be queen of the Prom! Very pretty indeed!

Ann, that Melusine is to die for!! Wonderful of Hans to sharing with you. Melusine's lines remind me of the distinct lines of yourt "Charisma Mix" flowers that I showed you. Very distinctive and charming!

I love the fragrance and the flowers of Frangipani!!!!
Have some too, but they dont like the Indoor- growing. They had never bloom.

    Thanks everyone.

Frank, I grow most all of my Amaryllis outside. When it is cold or nasty I will bring them under the patio. That is a Plumeria, one of the few that survived our freezing temps this winter. I had a number of Plumeria/Frangipani trees but the frost did them in. My favorite fragrance I have no longer was was the brilliant yellow aztek gold...in better times

Cindee, I still remember the Plumaria perfume I bought for my wife from Honololo in 1964. I never found the perfume again but have the plant ever since. Only some varieties have that intence fragrance.

Can anyone tell me if Yume Mitai is currently available commercially?

  • dondeldux z6b South Shore Massachusetts
    9 years ago

Yume Mitai is a Japanese bulb that many of us purchased on EBay. Komoriya is currently selling hippeastrum/amaryllis bulbs on EBay after a hiatus of several months and although they do not currently have Yume Mitai for sale I'm sure they will again sell this variety in the near future.

  • blancawing

    Hello drsrains,

Komoriya may list âÂÂYume Mitaiâ again on eBay. However, please note that their prices have risen dramatically. For example, Salmon Taenia, a papilio hybrid, was available for $35 last year, which seemed to be a high price at the time. Presently, the opening bid is $80. That is an increase of more than 128%.

This dramatic price increase comes at a time when economists are predicting that the Japanese yen will continue to sink to new lows against the U.S. dollar. Indeed, today the yen declined to its weakest level in seven years. Caveat emptor!

High prices, indeed! Last year I paid $30.00 for 'Secret Alleys' and it is now listed at $80.00 starting bid. His prices this year are ridiculous and I won't be buying any, that's for sure.

Additional info... I bought 2 Yume Mitai last year...one for $15.00 and the other for $18.00. Wonder how much they will be this year. Both are growing well but still waiting for some flowers. :(

The "need" to purchase bulbs of new released varieties decreases once you start to bloom your own hybrids or seedlings. They are your own and priceless. Keep warm everyone. Happy winter gardening!
