Anyone have an idea what this might be? I bought it as Red Lion, but I have never seen Red Lion with a white star in the middle. Thanks.

It looks very similiar to my H. "Bestseller". If the color is true in your second photo and the flower is a shade of "watermellon" red, carmine, then I believe it is Bestseller. The flowers of Bestseller are on the large side, 7", and the flower stays very "flat". This cultivar is one of those "Oldies, but Goodies" that has been around for 30 years but, it is still one of my favorites, in that shade of red.

Oh nice, Anna. I'm not sure of the name, but I love the cherry pink color - kinda like Hercules but with white striping. Great score!

I purchased this as "Cantata" many Ys ago. If it is actually the same then I have good news: "Once you got it, you will have it for ever": It is very vigorous, produces a good, strong offset every now-and-then that it becomes bloomable after 2 Ys AND, a particular property that this occurred to my vigilant eyes: The original bulb does not tend to AGE after some years. This appears to not be familiar knowledge but generally Hippeastrums and (some) other Amaryllids do not expand their bulbs ad libitum / infinitum. After a decade, if not even earlier, the original bulbs will become weaker.

The alleged "Cantata" appears to be, or is actually an exception, respectively, and the first bulb (circumference approx. 32 cm) that I had purchased, became the biggest Knight Star Lily bulb I had ever seen, with more than 20 leaves, 50 cm circumference and 4 scapes in the subsequent season. The only other bulbs THAT big that I ever saw were of species of tropical Crinum

Wow! Sounds like you've got a real winner there and a beauty to boot! Anna, is it a new bulb and you bought it as a Red Lion? In a big box store? Must have been your lucky day....

I perceive that I included a misleading information.
The bulb reached this enormous size after, as far as I remember, SIX years. The Term "subsequent season" relates but to the season when the bulb had already attained 50 cm in circumference.

Where did you get this one?

I just looked on Emaryllys's site and your beautiful flower matches his Bestseller perfectly...I second Josh's question; where did you get this one and does anyone know who sells it? A real beauty...

Thanks everyone, and especially Hans! The color in real life is/was slightly redder than pink, and a trait of this bulb is that the blooms remained slightly upward-facing. (2 scapes bloomed simultaneously).

I bought this bulb in Quebec, as Red Lion, as I said. I buy them every year from my local "sells-just-about-everything-store", and they order from a place called "Simple Pleasures, and they tout themselves to be "simply the best". I must say, their bulbs are huge - really huge (bigger than RC), and the roots are always amazingly thick and plentiful. From their site: "Simple Pleasures is a North American based company with back-up inventory in the U.S., Canada and Holland to service our retailers throughout the season." Later on, I also get dahlias, glads, and all sorts of other bulbs - always top quality. They know me well at that store! :)

Note to Paul from RC if he reads this: I am not disparaging your bulbs - they always bloom wonderfully as well! :)

Here is a link that might be useful: Simple Pleasures

I must add that although my store does also buy the boxed kits - they also order "loose" bulbs, and those are the ones I go for - way bigger than the ones in boxes, and healthier too!
