Zombie, from Edensblooms-Hadeco

Posted by haxuan Vietnam (My Page) on

This is my first experience with Hadeco/Edensblooms and I've noticed that many of the bulbs seem to have very short scape (?).

The scape on my Zombie is about 12cm tall and it looks like it wants to open the blooms already.

This morning:

A few days ago:

Is this common with Hadeco bulbs or is it something wrong?

Many thanks for your advice.

Xuan

I bought three Hadeco bulbs from Eden's Blooms and both are having issues. My Joker aborted one of the scapes it came with, but the other is about to bloom. The bulb has shrunk even more ever since I got it. I did know that it would come very sprouted so I have no complaints about this one.

The Lemon Sorbet I ordered came with two scapes and many pale leaves. They turned dark green after placing them in front of the window, but haven't grown at all. The leaves are now turning yellow even though it has started growing many new roots.

I think that Eden's Blooms has had their Hadeco bulbs for a while. Perhaps that is why most were on sale. Mine both came with green mold on their roots. I'm still waiting for the Alfresco that they forgot to ship me. All the Dutch bulbs I have from the, are doing great as far as I can tell. Eden's Blooms didn't get their Dutch bulbs till December 30th so they're much fresher I guess.

I wonder why the flower was named Zombie. I do remember seeing it on the site but decided not to buy it. I bought two bulbs from Edensblooms and one was from Hadeco.

The Candy Floss still has its tiny leaves which has not pushed out at all. You can see the tip of them pushed slightly out of the bulb and just sitting there. The two flower scapes are still pushing upwards and they do appear healthy - so far. The bulb is shrinking on this one which I imagine because of the energy being put into the scapes.

But yeah, I can't wait 'til spring is officially here. I want to get the bulbs in the ground...

Dragonstone,
Zombie flowers hang their heads down.. well... just like Zombies!! They really do!! Very appropriate I'd say....

Hi Xuan,
Many of the Hadeco varieties are supposed to have short stems, although I'm not sure how short. Hadeco's website may have info on the scape height for each variety.
My experience with the Hadeco bulbs that I received from Eden's Bloom a couple of years ago is that the bulb performance quality isnt too good. (This included single Hadeco varieties too). In my experience, most of them produced poor quality scapes that eventually aborted. Alfresco never even bloomed that year for me. But Zombie from that batch order was the best performer and this is also one of my favorite variety.

Got Zombie from JS 2years ago. I love it. It does not seem to be a minature tho. Mine had large blooms & yes it does tend to hang its head!!

Although I thought Zombie would bloom right after the above post, it had managed to grow tall and bloom large, too. I really love its hue.

Here're some photos to share with you.

Yes, Donna... I was also watching if it would hang its head. But this does look like it's happy, indeed.

Thank you for your comment.

I actually would like all my scapes to be shorter. I really dislike long scapes - they look out of proportion to me and have more chance of tipping/breaking. If someone bred a variety with large flowers on five inch stalks I buy it right away.
Pretty color on that Zombie Xuan!

Jackie, how would you like this?

Too short, right?

This was what I feared for Zombie, but it didn't happen :)

Thanks for looking.

Jackie, there is a Hadeco cultivar named Hollywood that has very large 8.5 inch blooms on short stems about 10 inches long. I've read that all Hadeco hipps are bred to have shorter scapes so that they are easier to manage and look more proportional. Alcohol is also suppose to keep stems shorter when added while watering, though I'm not sure how it effect the bulbs otherwise. Can't be all that good in the long run.

Xuan five more inches and that's what I'd be looking for! Jared thanks for the info. I wouldn't try to manipulate the stems, but I would buy one that grew that way naturally.

I tend to agree with you about the shorter scapes..I like to move these plants around the house when they are in bloom and you need a third hand to do this when they are in a heavy clay pot! I would prefer about 12 to 15 inches but I've learned to live with what I get..and this year they are taller than ever!! You're right the presentation is much nicer on a shorter scape but after having a several virued bulbs when I get a healthy bulb that will re-bloom for me year after year, I have learned to appreciate the tall scapes..of course we can always cut them and put them in a vase, but I never do that unless I have an accident. I do remember telling a hippie pal of mine several years how much I hated tall scapes and therefore I wasn't going to buy any cybisters..all changed now..glee2 Pictures, Images and Photos

Donna, got cha!

Most of my bulbs have tall scapes unless they are deformed, somehow (like the above orange). And I always make stakes for them out of cloth hangers.

Here's a photo of my bloomer being held up by a "home-made" stake.

If any of us here want to make hippie stakes out of cloth-hangers, please see the photo illustrations in my blog in the link. (The blog is in Vietnamese, though)

PS: I have recently used the cheap "color-coated" cloth-hangers and made used of its "round hook" instead of making my own "hook", as illustrated in the blog.

Here is a link that might be useful: Hippie stake

Hi Xuan..Your Blog is great and all you have to do is use the translate button and if the translate button won't work then your pictures are self explanatory anyway..I think I'll get my husband to make a few of these for me..I wonder if I have any green hangers....
Thanks,
Donna
