Hippeastrum escobaruriae does not have a fragrance, I would lean more towards parentage from Hippeastum vittatum var tweedianum or another form of vittatum with long trumpets and strong fragrance than escobaruriae. There is a vittatum form from Uruguay and Southern Brazil that really looks a lot like 'Santiago' and is fragrant.

Fragrance is only apparent in few Hippeastrum species and the gene isn't always dominant, it's found mostly in trumpet species and only a small handful at that.

Josh thanks for your comment, very informative, really appreciate it. A few not-so-recent pictures were all I could find of H. escobaruriae and I have had problems seeing the family resemblence between 'Santiago' and H. e.

I ordered two H. vittatum bulbs from two separate European dealers, they should arrive in March-April. Now I'm really excited to get them and anxious to get them to blossom so I can compare flowers and fragrances... I also have a few seedlings from H. vittatum open pollinated seeds, from Mauro Peixoto.

Your photos are really lovely!! My Santiago was a bit vertically challenged this first time..3 super short scapes and only half the flowers came out, but the flowers were pretty, just stressed...Thanks for posting yours, I can enjoy them on their nice long stems!

To be honest, I never even thought to give it the sniff test as it was kind of behind some other plants. I just did and there is a very faint scent, but certainly nothing memorable but since these flowers were just about spent, I'll have to wait until the last flower that is going to bloom does, and sniff again...
