how to save bulb from bad aftercare?

hello,

I believe I have have done the after blooming care wrong!

I bought the bulb in late September from local garden center for 5pounds it grew foliage First, 4 leaves) then flowered the bloom lasted 1 week and died. after 2 months passed I cut the plant to an inch from "neck" leaves all fell over was growing yellow. so I cut it, I didn't pull the bulb I put it onto on book shelfs. and now it has a 13" leaf on it. from what I cut and that has now gone yellow. I have pulled the bulb removed dried shriveled roots and left healthy fleshy white onses on, I rinsed bulb under warm water remove mud and so on.

now how do I store it? I don't wish to grow it yet. saw dust (mammal cage bedding) or straw in a open box to stop it rotting?

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to grow it now. The yellow leaves are a possible sign that it's not getting enough light. The leaves need to be lush and green to fuel the bulb in order for it to bloom again in the spring. Do you have a sunny window or can it go outside? The growth cycle is a full year, with months of active growth followed by rest (dormancy). You have taken a bulb that was dormant, grew it for a few months and are trying to make it dormant again without the opportunity for it to prepare for next year. If it continues like this, you will most surely be disappointed.

I would pot it up and let it grow until at least September, then you can try to let it rest for a couple of months before you ask it to bloom again. While the bulbs really want to live, blooms are a tricky business. Many times a bulb that is bought will bloom immediately and then will take a couple of season (ie, skipping a year of blooms) in order to get into a cycle.

If you can find a copy of V. Read's book on Hippeastrum at a local shop, that is one of the authorative volumes. Also, don't hesitate to read this list's FAQ at the top of the messages (the one that says "Do not post here"!).
