Amaryllis bulb - no longer flowering

I have one of those large Iris bulbs, given to me as a Christmas present a few years ago (you know, the ones they sell in shops as a 'kit' - bulb, compost, pot). The first year it flowered, but in subsequent years it just puts out long leaves.

Now the box says to discard after it has flowered - this seems terribly wasteful to me and is no doubt just to ensure that the bulb grower and retail stores get more sales.

So how can I 'reset' the bulb so that it flowers next time?

Put it in the fridge for a few months, then bring into into a warm room and water it?

Or water it after a few months but keep it in a dark place until a shoot appears?

Will I need to feed it? It's still using the original compost.

Thanks
