For me it takes 3 years from seed to bloom. Sometimes longer. The shortest ever I've heard of was just under a year with optimal conditions.

You might also find as I have that certain seedlings from the same batch will be much more vigorous for what ever reason and some will take forever to bloom. I have about 17 seedlings of a papilio x Exotic Star cross and the first seedling bloomed in about 2 years and the rest go on and on with only one other one reaching a good size that might bloom before this year is out. No differences in their culture, just some genes are better I guess.

I have also tried planting them in the ground for the summer and found that I lost many of a special cross for one reason or another. So now if the cross is special I plant them in a whiskey barrel and I find they do better. Of course pulling them up in the fall is not to their liking and sometimes they will sulk for the better part of the winter and I find I have gained nothing. Every year I find myself doing something different always trying to find the optimum way to grow these seedlings. I haven't found it yet....âºâº
