Here is Madame Butterfly. She is eight inches across and looks like a big red papilio. So beautiful.

    Maida,

I'm covered in potting mix - repotting my mature mandonii and bukasovii bulbs.
My computer's keyboard may not appreciate my typing with dirty fingers, but I couldn't resist commenting. Your 'Madame Butterfly' is absolutely stunning, and your garden is a veritable treasure trove! I look forward to further wondrous revelations.

OMG!! Absolutely stunning!! I wish I lived close enough to see your garden, but have no fear I'm very very far away!! We will all have to enjoy your garden through your beautiful pictures and like Blanca I can't wait to see what other treasures you come up with!! I wonder what papilio was crossed with to come up with that beauty and like Santos was, I wonder why it is no longer in production!!

I am so glad I bought it when I did. I never saw it offered for sale again. So if you see something you like, you better buy it as it may not come your way again. It has produced a few offsets over the years. I now have separated the two big mother bulbs hoping for some more offsets in the future.

It makes me wonder why they would have discontinued such a stunning variety...

Salut from Germany, and thank you for sharing this! "Mme Butterfly" looks like a Primary Hybrid from crosspollinating H.papilio from a TETraploid hybrid. I would absolutely try self pollination. Check whether it is - as are 4 Primary Papilio Hybrids of mine NAMELY: My 2 siblings of "PapDon" AND my 2 siblings of "PapMinPic"-
a specimen which behaves like a TETraploid - which are in the most cases self fertile.

    Maida,

Since you've had this bulb for some time now in the past has it successfully set seeds for you? It is a beauty!!

I have several crosses with the Madame. It will be a couple of years before I see what they look like. The seedlings are very vigorous and grow fast.

    Hi Maida,

She is very beautiful and so deserving of her name. I would be very happy to have her in my collection.

Just this morning I pollinated my papilio with Neon Rose and Honey Bee. Since she only gave two flowers, those are the two I decided on. Now let's wait and see what happens.

    Warm Regards,

    Fred

Thanks Fred! If I am lucky this year and am able to get seeds from either Party Pooper or the Madame I will send you some if you are interested. I must warn you though that both grow to large bulbs with lots of leaves and large flowers. I know you are a mini lover.....

    Hi Frank,

I hope that you, the girls, and my handsome friend Donni are happy
    and well.

Do you remember that in the spring of 2010, you kindly sent
me seed from your ‘Madame Butterfly’? One
seed germinated, and the seedling is thriving.

I look forward to seeing its maiden flowering with great anticipation!

All the best to you and yours,

    Blanca

P.S. How is your Clinanthus incarnatus (aka Stenomesson
    incarnatum) growing?

They are both very pretty. It would be hard to choose one. I got lucky and a very nice person from the forum sent me some madame seeds. They are only a few months old but growing very well. I know I have a long time to wait to see the flowers. Maybe one day I'll get lucky again and end up with a few party pooper seeds..... meanwhile I get to see everyone else's photos. Thank you all for posting these beauties.

    Maria,

My Madame bloomed at the very end of March last year not too long after she arrived. Ours came from the same Bulb Fairy☺☺ and since she arrived has put out 2 complete sets of leaves so I'm looking each day to see if she'll bloom again soon! The only seeds that I got last time were selfs and they are very vigorous.

    Louana,

I'm glad that the seeds grew well for you, as they had been in the refrigerator for a long time, I still have a few left from last April or and maybe I'll try to germinate a few more. If they do germinate they will be nearly 1 year old!! Also the few that I have growing are very strong seedlings. This next bloom time I'm going to have some real fun deciding what to put on the Madame!!!

As for Party Pooper she won't self (for me) but her pollen is good although she is very picky so I'll keep you in mind if I'm lucky enough to have some blooms that successfully produce seeds!

I actually have two Party Poopers and one is huge and the other just doesn't seem to want to grow. I've compared pictures and the flowers are little different on the one that is small and I keep hoping she'll flower and maybe the pollen from the other one will do the trick for a self.

So party pooper is a difficult one huh? All the pretty ones are. It's great that you have two. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Hoping that trick works. I'm sure you will think of a great cross with madame. Keep us updated and let us know what pollen she accepts. I hope to cross one three years from now!!

    Hi Donna,

Thank you!!! That would be wonderful and don't worry about the large bulbs. I must be a glutton for punishment cuz I have some real giant hippies and I love them just as much as the minis. I have a showmaster with an absolutely huge bulb and the leaves are already a foot long . I just brought her up from of the basement two weeks ago and she's growing great guns.

    Warm Regards and Thanks,

    Fred

    HI Frank,

Thank God and I'm happy you're recuperating and doing well :-) I have several stenomesson and they look just like yours, healthy but no flowers. It seems like they need to reach a "critical mass" before they flower? How long have you had yours?

    Warm Regards,

    Fred

Fred i think, they need a resting period with cooler temps and that´s what i did not gave them last year. We will see, what happens, when they get it in the next autumn.

A very few of us are lucky enough to posess this lovely bulb thanks to a former member of this forum. Mine is still alive but hasn't bloomed for a few years. They are no longer in cultivation (it's been a very long time) and I don't think that anyone knows exactly what the cross is other than papilio is one of the parents.

This picture is just a tease, it's from 2016!!
