short scape thoughts

While tending my Hippeastrums this spring I was trying to find similarities in short scape plants. I propose that it MAY be related to root crowding. I've observed nearly no short scapes on inground plants. The bulbs have the freedom to expand their root zone as needed. The longer the bulbs are grown in pots and tighter the bulbs are in the pot, the greater the likelyhood of very short scape. There a great number of variables. Size of pot, speed of growth, cultivar, substrate... Just a thought. What do y'all think?
