Amaryllis bulb planted outdoors turning brown

I received an Amaryllis in bloom for Christmas 2010, and planted the bulb outdoors last month. When I planted it, it had no leaves or blooms, so I planted the bulb at the same level as it was in the pot. A couple of weeks later I noticed a new leaf beginning to emerge -- yay!

Then, a certain wild nocturnal critter (nuisance) almost dug it up looking for worms/grubs in the soil. I fixed the soil, and it happened two more times after that. I haven't over-watered but did give it some to encourage root development.

Now, that new leaf is gone and the top of the bulb looks like it's gone dormant. Is it dormant, or were the roots disturbed too many times? Does it need more/less water?
