I think the forcing of dormancy is just the way to induce blooms in a somewhat predictable manner. I have bulbs that I force and others I don't. If you don't force dormancy they go into their own blooming cycle. Many people, like me, like to have blooms in the house during late autumn and during the winter. Also, storage space may be limited and dormant bulbs are easier to store in a climate where they can't stay outside all winter.

Mine will only bloom inside if I let them go dormant. I've seen several bloom outside in town in the ground, but mine won't.

Yours should do fine outside! How long have you been trying to grow them outside? They should do great with some mulching over the winter. Mine bloom outside April through June. What hybrids do you have?
