I wouldn't use either one of those things as it will cause water retention which is the worst thing for Hippeastrum. Hipps rot super easily, if you're able I would suggest using a mix more for Cactus or create your own with many well draining items like perlite or other coarse material as you want every last drop of excess water gone from the pot.

Thanks I suspected as much, but am new at this and want to do it right. I have 20 plus Amaryllis outside ( seven years old ) that are doing great. only help from me is that I leave them to mother nature with a spoon of slow release 10-10-10 each year just after blooms finish. I plan to put these outside next spring after blooms finish this winter. THANKS Bill

Josh this spring I`ll take a few pictures and post them. I have never dug and seperated them should I or just let them grow. I have not taken good care of them, just weed and fertilize them. I planted them in my home made compost( fall hardwood leaves mulched and mixed with coffee grounds and alfalfa pellets, turned and watered on 4 week cycle til spring) THANKS Bill

I actually used Miracle Gro moisture control quite successfully a couple of years ago, BUT with lots of additives: perlite, sand, charcoal, and crushed granite!

There was probably as much organic as inorganic...good drainage is KEY!
