You know you're in trouble when (notice I didn't say "You know you have too many amaryllis when..."!):

1) You get the order from BloomingBulbs and realize that you ordered some of the same bulbs from ______(insert any other bulb supplier here)!!

2) You can't keep track of what you have without referring to your "Master List" - that has now spilled over onto a 2nd page of 2 columns!

Ha ha, Kristi! I did that with Dancing Queen this year, 3 from VE, 3 from someone else! I Know I decided I wanted it laat year but this is rediculous.

I've got one... you buy sushi for lunch from the cafeteria because it comes in the perfect container to start your seeds in. (and sadly that's the truth, too) Alana

You start saving the white plastic knives from work because you can wash them and use them to label your seedlings!

The front gallery porch of your home, that you have rearrange (making space for people transit) so husband doesn't complain, is again full of plants you have no idea how.... or you have, but... can't resist.

You learn to sleep through the timers kicking on and off... and the bright, blinding lights, that look like an airport from the outside, don't even wake you up!

When you take money from your grocery stash to buy bulbs with!

When the sink load of "dishes" you're washing are actually pots and garden tools... and maybe a coffee cup or two!

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

When you not only have hippies growing in "normal places" like the livingroom and the patio, but also your guest's room is getting a bit crowded, your attic, and even your bathroom!
When you can't resist to buy that unhappy looking- fellow growing in the cheap soilmix, or starting to send scapes in a box at the department store! Wish i could buy them all :-)

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

You ask your coworkers to give you their emty "icky sticky cheesecake slice to go" boxes from the Cheesecake Factory because they too are just perfect for starting seeds (see sushi comment above)...I have cookie containers from WalMart under my desk for very same reason!

When the highlight of your life is getting the newest bulb catalogs in the mail!

When you start giving away bulbs and getting particular about the varieties you order!

When you look at every piece of furniture in your house as a potential resting place for a pot, and you gauge how much natural light the plant can get by with... or should you just hang more grow lights in the living room!

This is like a support group for hippeastrum addicts... we could just as well be named Amaryllids Anonymous!

You know you're in trouble when... your car automatically turns in at the garden center!

When you sit on the floor at WalMart and go through every single boxed kit, looking for the perfect bulb!

When you spend more time caring for your plants than doing housework!

When you used to hate winter, but now love it because it means Hippeastrum Season!

You know you're addicted when you exchange literally hundreds of emails between other hippeaddicts regarding your bulbs, plants and future bulb purchases, to include but not limited to hippis, orchids, AV's, succulents, cacti. And that this happens in roughly a month's time.

Also, that you begin sending possible ebay scores to these friends titled, "Warning: Enabler Alert", only to get an email a day or so later that that friend did in fact buy that plant on ebay.

The roots of this addiction runs deep.

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

(keeps on giggling) Let's ad to the confessions of this Amaryllids Anonimous group: when you buy a bulb you positively know you already have, but yours has already bloomed and you want to enjoy the gorgeous flowers again and can't wait to do so. You end up with two Apple blossoms, three Red Lions, etc. that you of course, can't throw away as some other people do. By the way, here in the Netherlands a lot of people don't even know that you can keep amaryllis like a house plant and watch it flower every year. They just throw the bulbs away as soon as flowers fade. I think it's sad....

Paraphrasing Jodi: You arrange your house living space around your plants(and cats), and explain to the cats why their window space has been severely reduced :D

Also, You know you're in trouble when DH helps you bring the bulbs outside in the early summer, and he actually counts them: "um, did you know you have 70 bulbs"? To which I respond: "Really? I had NO idea!" ;)

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

You put plants on the roof because not only is the yard full but so are all the porches, windows, you've planted both sides of the alley, are growing plants on your neighbors porch...
AND you come to this site looking to see if bulbs are out yet.
The staff at the local nursery knows you and just points when you walk in. Or worse they have a bunch of stuff behind the counter they think you'll like, and you buy it all.
You live with another gardener and you enable each other.
You buy uh, a bunch of bulbs you already have because they were cheap and well, they jumped in my cart I SWEAR they did!

Tally HO!

RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

wow, I'm guilty of all the above.... and a few more...

... when you buy a new house so you can have a bigger yard.

... when you buy a new bulb and wonder what characteristics will come through when you cross pollinate.

... when you see a flower somewhere and you become obsessed with getting one, no matter how hard it is to obtain (Shacoba!).

... when you let a work call go to voice mail because you're too busy responding to a forum post.

... when you find it unusual that there wasn't a plant delivered in the mail each day.

... when you buy a plant that has no hope of growing in your zone, so you spend hundreds of dollars on warming mats, lighting, humidifiers, etc just to keep it alive indoors.

... your wine/beer fridge doesn't have room for anything but bulbs.

... when you finally realize you are a sick person (CHAD) and are happy about it and hope there is never a cure.

... when you seek out the clearance rack at Home Depot and Lowe's looking for the sick plants you can take home and nurse back to health at a bargain.

At least I'm in good company! :-)

When looking for our next home, I'll be more interested in the gardening potential of the yard, and how the natural lighting is throughout the house! I don't want a large house... I want a decent sized yard, plenty of eastern and southern windows, and maybe even a space for a small greenhouse!

If you must have an addiction, bulbs are a good one to have! I'm hopelessly addicted!

Growing and working with plants is relaxing, fulfilling, and it feeds the soul... what more could a person want?!

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

VEry good you guys! Keep it up. I am still pretty tired after the pnuemonia but am enjoying this very much! Especially the "customized potting soil" one. Talked to the guy at our True Value and he didn't have anything in a premade mix that did not include something to hold moisture but he recommended our local Farm and garden store where he used to work. As soon as I get the energy I will go see what they have. IN the meantime I am still cleaning and "debugging" my bulbs that have been outside and waking up my seedlings that dried out so much they went dormant.

When you motivate your work self by rewarding new business with a new bulb!

When you realize that that wall you've been wanting to build along the front of the house to create a courtyard is really a great idea because it would give you more places to plant hippes and potted plants could line the top of the wall!

When you get your lazy self to shade off the west side of the house (which has needed doing for years) because it will be a great place to winter seedlings. Then you realize that the more potted plants along that west wall, the cooler the house will be next summer. "Honey, I think I've figured out a way to save us money on the summer utility bill." :-D

RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

When DH helps take the hipps back indoors this weekend and he informs you there are 20 bulbs already in the basement - and I tell him please stop counting! And then, he sees some bulbs in a basket in the living room (new arrivals - shhhh!)and asks what are those. To which I respond, amaryllis - to which he responds: "don't you have enough yet?" :) LOL I smile and remind him of the mid-November look-out for the Royal Colors delivery :)

Um - I guess the ones I'll be picking up at the local coop shortly will come in via my briefcase, and furtively potted. (Darned Virgo mathematicians and their counting habits!)

You come to this forum to see who has bulbs in the stores.

My neighbor is very happy with the bromeliad we put on her porch this week, it's got big pink blooms. We'll stick it back in the yard after it blooms, and put something else on her porch!
I'm thinking of putting amaryllis in her livingroom windows this winter, I can see them when I pull up and then plant them in the garden after they bloom.

I'm not sure there even ARE 999 different hippeastrum varieties to shoot for... but you know you're in trouble when you pass the 50 bulb mark... and then the 75 bulb mark... and so on... you're right, Ryan... everyone needs a goal! :-)

Hi guys, I'm drooling at the mention of all these hipies you are talking about. I have always love amaryllis and had a couple of dozen when I sold my house and couldn't dig them out to take with. Loosing my home was bad enough OH but loosing my garden it was almost more then I could bear.It took about 3 years to even start thinking about gardening again. (too depressed)

Long story short, this past spring I started to garden again. I have 4 hipies now and I'm looking for more.
Can some of send me some reliable places to purchse from???

And if there is anything that might interest you on my trade list let me know.

Hungry for hipies,

There are lots of good bulb sources, but I think a few of our favorites include Royal Colors, John Scheeper's, Blooming Bulb, Easy To Grow Bulbs, Willow Creek Gardens, American Meadows, Brent & Becky's Bulbs, White Flower Farm, MZ Bulbs, Nature Hills... just to name a few. I'm sure there are more online catalog sources.

Then, there's Ebay, any local source like garden centers, WalMart, Lowe's, Home Depot, Menard's... and keep your eyes open at grocery stores, hardware stores, and anywhere else that sells garden plants and supplies.

I included a link for Royal Colors... any of the named companies can be easily found by Googling. Or, just Google "Amaryllis Bulbs" or "Hippeastrum".

And once you locate and look through the online catalogs, the next step is making your bulb choices! Good luck! There are so many wonderful varieties available that making an affordable list is next to impossible!

Other sources are utilized, as well... we occasionally go in on group purchases so we are able to import from other countries, or just to keep shipping and pricing reasonable.

If there's a sale, you'll hear about it here! And believe me, it doesn't take long to amass a huge collection of different varieties... and then, there are other tender amaryllids to collect and grow... relatives of the Hippeastrum. Some of us branch off into collecting other bulb types. It's an addiction, but one that has many rewards!

Welcome! Let the Season begin!

Here is a link that might be useful: Royal Colors - Quality Amaryllis/Hippeastrum Bulbs

Be sure to check out the different online companies that offer these bulbs... the pricing does vary. Some are a little more, and some are a little less... and some places have different shipping costs, too.

John Scheepers is one of the less expensive places... although, I'm not certain how cheap their shipping is.

And if you don't mind waiting a bit, many of these places will have sales after the Holidays.

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

Sales, yes, but the bulbs are startng to show problems by then and the nursuries want to get them off their hands while they can still make money on them. I have learned the hard way to buy all of mine before December. THe ones I have bought after that either froze in transit or were not top quality. If you buy later you will want to get adept at cutting out rotten spots and treating fungus.

Another source for cheap bulbs would be to ask for the bulbs after your friends are done with their Christmas amaryllis, and grow them on to rebloom the next winter. So many people do treat them as throw away bulbs and might be glad to pass them on to you.

I buy a lot of them in lots of 3 from Van Engelen, and for you I think the shipping would probably be only in the 10per cent range. I have to pay 20 % out here to Washington State. You might want to go to their site and watch for any late season sales. THe extras would make good Christmas presents if you do not want them for yourself. Happy Growing!

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

Lizalily....not to disagree....but I had excellent luck with the bulbs that I bought from Royal Colors in March 2008. They all bloomed and continue to do very well. I think that if you start out with a great company (like RC) they take excellent care all year. The bad bulb is a rarity from them. Sure wish they could cut the shipping to the US though!!

Kristi
(officially past the 100 bulb mark...know I'm close to 75 varieties!)...we should have the bronze circle for those with 25 varieties, the silver circle for those past 50 varieties, the gold circle for 75, and platinum for those with 100 varieties!! What fun!
:-)

The later in the season it gets, the more you take a chance on getting bulbs that are "leftovers"... this is true. And then there are climates to consider when shipping... hippeastrum bulbs don't do well in cold weather.

Good suggestions from Lizalily... or, if you have the patience, collect them slowly by only getting a few new ones each season.

And, as Kristi says, it's dependent upon the company you choose... and luck. I've been happy with the majority of my purchases... but then, I'm getting pretty good at saving rotting bulbs!

I'd have to do an actual variety count... but I'm up there in quantity! Plus, I also collect other tender amaryllids, such as nerine, lycoris, crinum, habranthus, rhodophiala, and others. I live in a jungle!

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

When you have a goal.
Ryan we are in trouble!
I bought a bunch of bulbs from Brent & Becky's a couple of years ago in Feb. maybe, they had a sale, all but one bulb arrived in great shape and they sent me a replacement for the one rotted one.
With all the new crosses, bulbs from other countries, I bet we can hit 999. Jodi WHERE are you going to put them all?
My New neighbors on the East side were out yesterday in their garden. All I could think was I can stick some plants there, and there, and why are they planting THAT! I have something that will work much better there....
Tally HO!

Tally, I keep them all indoors, in clay pots, shoulder to shoulder, jammed on windowsills and shelves, under lights... our little one room apartment looks like a jungle on the inside.. and from the outside, it must resemble an airport beacon!

I'm actually surprised the law hasn't stopped by to see what all the indoor grow lights are about!

Kristi, we DO have a 12 step program in place... but I think ours is 12 steps to having the most hippeastrums and how to keep them all healthy! LOL!

"Well, last year I bought San Remo, and it turned out to be Pink Impression, a really nice surprise. Soooo, I might have more surprises if I buy more bulbs (I love surprises!)"

What do you think?

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

You need to keep a spread sheet of all of your plants and bulbs!

You promised yourself and DH lol that you were done planting for the season, and you go and buy more bulbs, and more bulbs lol

You keep a backup garden diary on Dave's Garden, just in case your puter crashes and you need to know what you have planted

You begin to order a 100 plant markers, thinking that'll be enough, when they come it's not nearly enough lol

You start hiding the fact that you bought yet another plant from DH lol

I could probably go on and on... lol

When you make a special trip to town so you can buy more poultry grit (granite chips) and reptile bedding (pine bark fines), both items which you use to create your custom medium!

When the first place you go, no matter what store you enter, is straight to the plant section to check for hippeastrum bulbs!

RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

I know I have about 130 bulbs but not sure how many varieties. (We are only counting ready to bloom bulbs, not our seedlings, right. I also have about 40 new bulbs on sale on order so do I win? I have at least one of most varieties available now, with new ones ordered mostly in multiples of 3. THank goodness my cut flower business gives me an excuse to indulge myself! THese bright beautiful flowers are my winter lifeline to sanity and joy.

I hear ya, Lizalily! I seem to get more depressed as the days get shorter in autumn... and having a nice collection of indoor bulbs to care for really helps me maintain some semblance of sanity and joy, too!

Each year, I get at least a couple new bulbs for winter bloom... and between that, and pollinating the different flowers, and waiting for seed pods to develop for planting... it all keeps me busy. I don't have time to be too depressed!

The ground is still a bit muddy, but I managed to get two dozen roses planted and mulched, and I began bulb planting. I got about 5 bags of tulips and allium bulbs in... so, I'm off to a decent start. I think if I have two more decent days, I can finish up the planting and begin winterizing!

Pray for decent weather!

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

OK here's a new one for me... I mean, from me ;-) You work from home on the day your big box o' bulbs is due to be delivered so you can open them up right away and check them out. And you can also stash them so no one else in the house sees exactly how many you ordered! Alana

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

When you find yourself "giving away" your pink floydxpapilio 2 yr old seedlings and tell your friends "call me if they put up a scape". The plan: they take care of your biggest most likely to bloom crosses over the winter and sometimes they give them back anyway. I only gave the ones I think will bloom- they get a bloom, I hope to see the blooms and to have the room to pamper the rest.

When you send your husband an email titled, "What wifey wants for Christmas" and the only content is a link to White Flower Farm followed by a list of amaryllis varieties. When he asks if he can buy the same bulbs from another vendor, you insist that White Flower Farm guarantees 2 scapes. And you end the conversation with "Honey, it's where Martha Stewart buys bulbs."

 o
RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

Now you're spending all your $$ on accessories for the greenhouse and when your coworkers ask you what you want for Christmas, all you can think of is bulb related items or bulbs themselves, but you don't trust them to buy the right ones!!

When you find a nursery that has a bulb that you want and it's packaged up in one of those kits that you just can't open (Fairy Tale) and your husband positions himself between you and the sales person so they won't see that you are shredding the box to inspect the bulb and you still can't get it open! Then you act as the block and DH
tries to open the kit and you both fail and you walk out and you grumble all the way home!

Donna.......... (never did get a Fairy Tale) well there is always next year........

RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

OMG, I must be certifiable then! My passion for plants expands well beyond hippies as they include many different "tropicals" and "arids" an that just the "House Plants". I also can not plant a Lantana in the ground, they must go into pots so I can carry them over from year to year! My current "project" with them is to grow them in "Standard Form". Which is also how I grow the majority of my Tropical Hibiscus, which includes two I have gropwn from a cross I made several years ago and one of them have never bloomed! (But I keep it anyway because I just "know" it will be something very special!)

I bought a bunch of cacti at Lowe's simple because they were not going to carry them over inside and what didn't sell would be pitched. I have several duplicated varieties there!

Then there's the garden plants. I hybridize Daylilies (Hemerocallis) and am so out of room it is pathetic! I have at least 3 new plants coming in the spring and am still trying to figure out where to put the ones I got this past summer that are wintering over in pots! We won't even talk about the thousands of seeds I have from crosses made this season or the ones I have held over the last 2 season because I had no place to plant them out!

I am not only addicted I am OBSESSED!

Rebecca, who they are coming to take away, hay, hay!

When you stare down the store clerks and dare them to come tell you not to open every box! As if a mere salesperson could stop us!

When you have so many bulbs and so little space, you begin to devise ways of vertical gardening indoors!

When you freak out at a heater malfunction, fearing your plants will freeze before your husband can fix it! Yikes!

When all you want for Christmas is bulbs or bulb related items... and your entire family knows!

Sometimes, it will allow a message to be sent again, if you are reloading without getting to the main forum page first. I've had this happen a couple of times... and as soon as I hit "reload", I think... oops! But it's too late.

The only other explanation is a glitch somewhere, perhaps.

If you don't already have it, download Spybot - Search & Destroy and run it... you may have a funky script running in your browser that shouldn't be there.

Download it at the link below. It's free, and it's highly recommended by Larry... my tech-geek husband!

When you spend more time looking for the right ingredients for your medium mix, than you would for the right ingredients to cook a dish!

Well, I had to add this one because it might even be unique. Or maybe not, LOL.

The other evening SO walked into my office and said, "Do I need to get a bulb outfit? You're spending so much time these days reading about bulbs, looking at your bulbs, looking at pictures of blooming bulbs... I'm afraid I'm going to have to dress like a bulb to get your attention.

I replied, "I think I'm going to have to post that one."

BTW, there is no bulb widow here. Just a birthday week and someone wanting a little extra attention.

You know you're in trouble when you realize that every spare inch of kitchen counter surface (and extra workspace that you've made for the top of the dog crates) is taken up by Amaryllis that are either in bloom or about to bloom. RE: You know you're in trouble when....(Am I the only one?)

We are having a very VERY windy night! All I can think of is that the greehouse is going to go flying (it's a pop up) and we will have a freeze tonight to boot....so will worry all night that stakes won't hold and "flowerhouse" will be in neighbor's yard before it's all over! Cover I made against summer's downpours was torn in pieces (it was just pvc and polycarbonate roof); the pvc wasn't glued together, so it just popped at the joints and the "roof" ended up in the middle of my yard. Couldn't figure out what the dogs were barking at!

RE: You know you're in trouble when....(add to the list!)

When 2 BIG things happen within minutes...I really must have TROUBLE!

1) you dash out back in temps of 15F to check the temp of the greenhouse (which is a toasty 55F)...and worry because the electricity went out for at least a moment last night, but you don't know HOW long, but the digital clock was blinking when you woke up!!

2) you go to clean off your camera's SD card (it's been used since last Sept...and you've taken a cool vacation, etc) and realize that nearly 500 of the 600 photos are of your amaryllis blooms! SIGH

Jodi...I don't think I have too many. It's just a matter of being brutally honest. You would cull a puppy with a problem without thinking twice. Hippis are the same way. I'm not tossing my Pasadena out yet. We all know they improve with a second scape, etc. Mine is very plain compared to others posted, and if it's an inferior example of that particular hybrid, I'd rather set it aside and focus on a genetically strong, better representative of Pasadena.

This is true... I wish some genetic issues would improve with age, but plants are the only things that can exhibit poor blooms one season, and better blooms the next.

The problem is... we don't know the history of the bulbs before we purchase them... if we did, we'd have it made!

She replies that she did a GOOGLE search for Pink Diamond and lo and behold her search reveals a photo that you took posted on this photo. She then refers to you as a wealth of knowledge and starts bombarding you with questions...and of course you encourage her to join the FORUM!!
