As far as unpotting them....sure you can! Once they are dormant and the leaves have dried and fallen off (or been pulled or cut), that's a great time to clean them up a little. Shake the dirt from the roots, trim back the neck, and look for pests! I even know that some trim back the roots by about 1/2 - you figure some of those roots are going to dry up during storage and the bulb will send out loads of fresh thick white roots!

I'm not sure I'd peel all the layers back (although I do that prior to replanting) as that offers some protection from the bulb drying out a little. Don't cram a bunch in a paper bag, but rather...layer them if you can. I use that packing material that is like shredd cardboard. It lets air circulate and avoids rot and mold. If you layer them in boxes, then you can stack the boxes and be very efficient in your use of space. Don't forget...if you have tags for the bulbs, lay them with them in the box! OR..just get a bunch of surprises next spring!

But the leaves never turn brown. So I kept mine outside in the shade in pots at the temperature dropped. I reduced the watering. Maybe they froze last night. I don't know. But the things never "go dormant". So how do you make that happen? Do you just whack off all the green leaves and "get 'er done"? I'm also in zone 5.

If you bring them in and quite watering completely they will go dormant, the change in the lighting and watering will cause the leaves to yellow and fall off. These plants will stay evergreen if given the option, it takes them a little bit to go dormant after you quit watering but once the reserve in the pot is gone it will sleep!
