Planting depth and pots

Hello, I have observed in this forum, Hippeastrum mature bulbs planted in 12 Oz drinking glass to 6-8 inch plastic pots and rarely in bigger pots I have also observed that mostly the bulbs are just placed on the soil and never buried more than half.
I grow my seedlings in the ground, only a few bloom the second year but most do so in third year, by then I find the bulb has settled about an inch below the surface.
To my mind this should be its natural growing depth.
Again I believe there must be some wisdom if the bulbs are being grown so shallow and in such small pots.

Please make me wiser.
Arif
