Phil, why would shade make them develop faster? It's been my experience that my bulbs do very well in a well lit, warm window. I would give them the best light source you can and make sure that they aren't too cool.

I agree with Kristi. The bulbs have been pre-programmed by the grower to begin pushing up flower scapes as soon as they are introduced to the elements needed. These elements are moisture, warmth, and light.

Keep in mind that before you obtained the bulbs, they were most likely kept in a large cooler, in a state of dormancy.

Once you pot them up, water them in, and place the pots in a warm room with bright light, scape growth should begin.

Also keep in mind that there are other variables at play... individual genetics, bulb variety, and probably a few others.

As long as you maintain a warm temperature comfortable for yourself, and keep the pots in bright light, scape growth will happen. You can't really rush nature any more if you've given the bulbs what they need, and you are. Be patient.
