For Chaz - Cutting Update!

| Just a little update on the Dendrobium piece that you gifted me with... I was so nervous when I first got it, hoping it would root and do well... no worries! Here he is today!
He seems to love the east window, and he hangs out with a bunch of other young orchids... Phals, Catts, Etc... he sure is looking healthy! I'm so surprised, because orchids aren't really what I'm best at growing... but apparently, Dendrobiums are able to cope with my drier conditions!
And here is some new growth toward the bottom of the Chalice Vine... it appears to be branching off?
I don't know too much about this plant... I looked it up once, but my memory doesn't retain much these days! Again, he seems to like the east window and the extra lighting, and is growing rather well!
Here's the Dendrobium with his little group of orchid buddies...
Ok... back to our regularly scheduled program of hippeastrum bulbs... just wanted to share a little... I'm always surprised by a plant's ability to survive, and even thrive in conditions that aren't especially kind... and my environment is not that kind to orchids.
Thanks for looking! And, thanks, Chaz! He's the cutest little Dendrobium... and he's really growing well! |

Jodi, Thanks for the update, you're going to be amazed at how much growth that dendro is going to put on and how quickly now that it's taking off. The momma is in a 6 inch pot, and the pseudobulbs are over 12 inches tall now! It blooms january on for me and is heavily scented. I'm glad to see your Chalice vine doing well to, once they mature they often enter a dormancy, like your hippis let it do it on it's own sched. In the tropics they are lianas, so that's another one that will eventually get huge. Thanks again, Chaz |

| Jodi and Chaz, Jodi - hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread, but just wanted to let Chaz know about the Epi cuttings he shared with me. I've lost their tags (I'm good at that), but they have grown unbelievably. I'd guess in about a year, they should bloom. |

| No problem, Kitty! Everyone here is free to hijack away! No worries! I'm just amazed that some things survive for me, at all... rooting cuttings is not my strong point! Last night, I re-potted the Dendrobium I got from Lowe's recently... it was on the clearance rack for 4 bucks... it came in a ceramic cup-like thing with no drainage, and it was tightly wrapped in moss. I figured I'd better find out what the roots looked like... and sure enough, a few were not looking happy. I re-potted it into a mixture of Al's Mix and larger orchid bark chunks, so I hope it'll be a little happier. What is it with the retail industry and their need to sell us stuff that's destined to die if left in the circumstances sold in? I don't know about you guys and gals, but I don't consider bulbs and orchids to be disposable items! What a waste! Chaz, I'm amazed at the growth of everything you sent! The Den is growing faster than I thought it would, and the Chalice Vine is really getting tall! I'm thinking the Den will need more size before it blooms... so maybe next year. That pot is only a 2 inch. How old will the Chalice Vine be for dormancy? What should I watch for... falling leaves, I'm sure... hold back on the watering... anything else? It's about a foot and a half to two feet tall now, in an 8 inch clay pot. Thanks! Anyone can join in... consider this an update thread on cuttings and bulblets! |

Kitty, the small cacti cutting you sent me is really growing great, as is the scilla. I'm not near the sun/plant room right now and can't remember all that you sent. I'll have to check on what I sent you as far as epi's, probably fuschia kiss, (I have no idea if that spelling of fuschia is correct , never looks right no matter how I spell it) And maybe epi oxypetallum the night bloomer, and maybe even Ackermanii a huge red flowered beauty. I do have a night bloomer you sent me, kind of a mini one? epi pumilla I believe. That one I hope to bloom next season! Jodi, if that chalice vine is in a 8" pot I'd let it be for a year or two easily. It will drop leaves when it's ready to go dormant, I'm not sure dormancy is required though. When I lived in Miami we had one that went dormant and one that stayed evergreen. I think it needs to get about a 1/2 - 3/4 inch diameter trunk to bloom. The den that's growing so well was in a 4 inch pot when I got it about 4" tall as well and it was blooming. You may not be that far away! It also takes some pretty low temps in my plant room, easily to the upper 30s at times! It's so great to hear and see how well the babies I sent are doing! |

| The Chalice Vine's trunk is still about the width of a pencil... a thick pencil, but a pencil, nonetheless... so, I'm thinking it has some time before anything noteworthy will happen! Oh, and the little Clivia and Papillio bulblet just keep slowly putting out new leaves... doing very well! I just love trading plants and seeds and cuttings... it's so awesome to have these reminders of my friends right here with me! :-) |

| Chaz, Now that I see their names in print, the ones you sent were Ackermanii and Fuschia Kiss. I'll have to make up tags with those names so when they bloom I'll have their names ready to go. They summer'd inside this year and did extremely well. I never knew what the Epi was I sent you. I just called it my mini NBC because it has the same look and fragrance, just smaller. Thanks for the name. I put that one outside during the summer, and it does get quite large. It likes to be fed, and last year when I fed it well, it bloomed all summer. It was full of buds when I brought it inside last fall, but the buds fell off. This summer it got neglected and didn't do as well. I like it because it gets so many blooms. Speaking of blooms, I have a NBC that should be out in about two nights. I missed all the NBC blooms so far, so hope to catch this one. |
