I think because Chico is diploid, large flowering hippeastrums
- tetra. It`s need pollen of varieties with diploid count chromosomes.
In this matter search the posts of Haweha.

Another reason, even if the ploidies match, is that not all species (and their hybrids) will cross with one another.

But, just because you may attempt an incompatible cross it doesn't always mean total failure.. occasionally, you may just get lucky and get a few precious seeds..it only takes a couple out of an entire seedpod to strike it rich!! Look at Han's PapDons!! Don't hesitate to try anything if you have enough flowers to play with. If you only have a couple of flowers you may want to be more conservative with your experiments.

Another trick I have used is to make a "cocktail" of pollens using several, Now I know not many people would subscribe to this method but, last year I bought my very first papilio and I was so excited and had two flower which equaled two chances. On the first I used Tres Chic exclusively and got a pod full of visibly good looking seeds and they all turned to mush..not even one would germinate. The second pod, my last chance. I had mixed 4 or 5 pollens and got a nice fat seedpod with half of the seeds looking great..About 20 or so seeds were soaked and everyone of them germinated..Today, they are all growing very healthy leaves and all the bulbs are different sizes. I have 3 of them that are larger than golf balls and the rest are varying sizes. The general consensus was that Grafitti was the dad, but who knows, someone else's pollen might have hitched a ride in too, there might be 2 dads... The "coctail" was my insurance policy and it worked! Of course we'll probably be able to correctly ID the father when they start to bloom which I wouldn't be too surprised will be next year!!

Reproduction is a funny thing... and not ha-ha funny, but strange funny... which is why it's always wise to try a breeding if offspring is wanted... and to take precautions if it is not! ;-)
