New offerings this year at Lowe's

I am excited to report the display of Hippy's at the local Lowe's store had more than just Red Lion, Minverva and Apple Blossom. Finally!!!

My phone picture looks like I was running when I took this, but I wasn't. I have to admit I was excited to see all these new offerings:

From Fall 2009 - Amaryllis

From Fall 2009 - Amaryllis

Here we have boxed: 'Susan', 'Christmas Story', 'Star of Holland', 'Red Lion', 'Apple Blossom' for $5.98 yes $5.98 and they are pretty nice niced plump bulbs. They come with the cheap plastic pot in a neutral grey with the coir thingy.

In painted pottery containers with coir they have: 'Aphrodite', 'Lady Jane', 'Donau' and oddly 'Minerva' offered for $11.98.

Somehow, two of these "girls" just jumped in my cart. They were quite the lookers! I am going to be potting up 'Susan' and 'Aphrodite' later tonight since I have a cold and am stuck at home...waa waa!

I haven't ventured to any of the other 4 Lowes stores or HD to see what they have, but will very soon. What's being offered in your neck of the woods?

-Frank

I picked up a "Piquant" today at Lowes. Too bad they don't get a wider variety.....

I was at Lowes the other week and they only had Red Lion and Apple Blossom at one of the Lowes here. And if I remember correctly, they were a different brand of bulb kits. Please come on over to my local Lowes Aphrodite, I am sorta in love with this goddess...

The most exciting one locally available so far is Dancing Queen, but that was at a specialty garden center called Armstrongs.

I'm so bummed! How come you guys get all the good bulbs... and us northerners get the same tired three, year after year?! It's not fair, I tell ya!

And to make matters worse, now we're starting to get bulbs with suspicious NBF looking holes and stuff! What's going on here?!

All I have to say is... choose your bulbs carefully, people! Make sure you open boxes and check bulbs for firmness, and look for any possible damage... you just never know!

Honestly, though... I'm glad you guys have such a nice choice this season! I'm hoping our nice garden center here gets some new varieties in... I'm still in the market for a nice plump Apple Blossom, and I'd love to find a Baby Star or something similar... we should be going there soon, and I've got my fingers crossed!

Lowe's corporate headquarters are not far from Raleigh. Of course the better stuff gets debuted close to the head honchos. :)

Apple Blossum and Red Lion here, that's it! I picked up 3 Apple Blossum at Lowes. Don't know yet about HD here. I don't usually shop HD anymore. No particular reason except Lowes is closer and always has what I need.

I stopped in at the same Lowes I reported on before and miracles do happen! I didn't see Aprodite, Lady Jane or Donau, but I got a Star of Holland, Christmas Story, and Susan for $5.98 each. And...just before that, I won the drawing at my fused glass class, for the ornament that the instructor made. This is gonna be a great week!

Lowe's in Texas City just had Red Lion, piquant & apple blossom $6.98 on Friday. I'm going to call them & ask when we're getting the GOOD ones! Home Depot-Red lion, minerva & apple blossom $6.98. Walmart, TX city, Red lion, minerva, apple blossom $5. Walmart Galveston-red lion, orange souverign, gilmor & one other potted & ready to bloom $7.50. Houston Garden Center GIANT apple blossom, red lion & minerva $19.99, white (? I forgot), redlion, minerva & apple blossom in box kits for $12.99.
Maas nursery had 10 including bogata, chica, several deep reds, I dont' remember! But they are supposed to be getting more so I'm headed up next Friday, average $17.99 each. Tom's Thumb on the island has evergreen, giraffe and 2 others $17.99 each. Somewhere in Time in Houston has an ad in the paper saying theirs are in, at least 20 varieties, unknown as I haven't been there yet, it's just sooo far away.
Tally HO!

My three Apple Blossums are all showing a flower stalk and some leaves already. Yippee! Should probably bloom around Christmas time!

Well, Jodi, here the situation is not much different than it is over there. They usually have the three or four same cultivars every year (AB, RED Lion, a white one and Minerva) A few days ago i was passing by a flower shop and saw bare bulbs. I couln't help but go take a look. Well, they had huge Christmas Gift bulbs, Jewel (!) Lemon Lime (!!) and... Rembrandt van Rijn (!!!!!!)

This was most unusual. It gives me hope things will eventually change here with more cultivars becoming available in the future.

Needless to say that Lemon Lime and Rembrandt van Rhijn followed me back home :-)

My two daughters were with me so they got a little workshop on choosing a healthy bulb too :-)

How wonderful! It's always nice when your children express an interest in something you love, too! I wish my daughter liked plants and gardening... but alas, she never seemed interested as a child, and she still doesn't! Perhaps some day... when she's way older and more settled.

Rembrandt Van Rijn is a lovely flower... I have that one! And Jewel is my very favorite! It's actually scented! A wonderful perfume, and very subtle!

And of course, I love greenish blooms on any plant, so Lemon Lime is a keeper, too!

Good score!

Lowe's in Dickinson has Susan, Christmas promise, Star of Holland, Apple blossom and Oskar for $5.98. In ceramic pots they had Red lion, apple blossom and Minerva. No Lady Jane, aphrodite or Doneau. Of course some jumped in the cart and have been potted up. I bought an apple blossom as now I am curious about them and others not being able to find a true apple blossom. I also bought one of the GIANT appleblossoms from Houston Garden center. Now to wait on the blooms and see what they really are.
Tally HO!
