Apple Blossom not doing anything

I'm new here, hi everyone! I'm a pretty new lover of Amaryllis, though I'm a horticulturist.

Last year a friend gave me a huge "Apple Blossom" bulb. I planted it and it was awesome. This year I let it grow until the leaves were drooping (probably at least September) and then cut it back and removed it to rest.

It made a baby, so I broke that off (very small).

Anyway, fast forward to a few weeks ago. I potted the large bulb and the baby. The baby has leafed out nicely, and I don't expect a flower for this year. However, the large bulb hasn't done anything. Nothing at all, not even a leaf starting to poke out or anything. The bulb still feels and looks healthy.

Should I leave it there, and expect that it will eventually start to grow? Is it possible that it didn't get enough rest time? Or that perhaps it's still trying to grow roots?

Any advice would be awesome. Thank you in advance!

It's probably still resting, I'd water it once and let it stay dry until it starts to grow, let it tell you what it wants!

Did you re-pot or un-pot? Usually once you have it in a pot it's best to let it rest there so it doesn't have to use all that energy flowering and growing roots, it also helps the bulb to grow larger in the long run as it has more mouths (roots) to eat with!

If the baby bulb is really small I'd expect it to bloom in a few years, probably two :)

I did un-pot it when I cut it back, but in the future I'll leave them potted. Rookie mistake!

Shodack...welcome to the forum.
Please go in and fill out your page with tell us where you live and enter an email so that we can communicate with you off list. A lot of the information and answers depend on where you are living!!

There is an FAQ (search the forum for FAQ) and you will find it. There as just about as many ways to do things as there are people on the list. Some will swear that you should let the bulbs rest bare rooted (some even take the opportunity to trim roots at this time), others say leave them in pots. Some people cut leaves other don't. Many on the forum don't force a dormancy at all and let the bulbs go into their own natural cycle for blooming in the spring. Mostly...it's a little bit of trial and error to see what works best for you!

Kristi has a great point, everyone does things differently and most if not all on this forum are pretty successful growers ;)
