Not sure if this is what you had in mind, but... {{gwi:374262}} It's not very pretty, but you can't normally see it and it works great. I kept it as simple as possible!
Btw, it has been cleaned since this was taken. I needed the photo for something else, last week, so this was just a quicky!;~) So ignore the six years of mess!!
It's in a sectioned off back corner of my 100 gallon paludarium. I use it primarily as a particulate/pre-filter for the single powerhead located on the opposite side of the system. There's also the small pump for watering land plants and the several small water features. It's located behind here! Like I said, you can't see anything from the viewing side. {{gwi:374263}} The water comes out the far right side and is drawn back through the screens behind here. It goes through a semi-cave and even w/o the plants, you can't see it!
Is it for salt or fresh water? I have used them for a fresh water tank. They where multi purpose for my needs. Depending on your plans for setting it up it can be done several ways. I had an 29G that was divided by placing 4 acrylic baffles that I cut to size from a piece I had bought at Home Depot. The water flowed from the tank that was drilled with an overflow into the first section with 3 baffles. A mechanical filter (coarse sponge) was in this first narrow section. The second section, largest section, was the fuge. Just rocks, freshwater plants, sometimes shrimp or even fry, then the last section was the return pump the had a coarse sponge on the intake. I would also have different type of DIY media "reactors" that where used. They are really simple to make if you can cut PVC pipe and glue it. You can purchase a Phosban Reactor and use any media you want or a canister filter, but I like to save money where I can.
