feeding cory catfish

I have just about given up seeing my little troup of cory cats actually get to eat any of the special sinking food I purchase for them. Always, always the platties and the betta get to it first and hog it all. That happens even when I have fed the other fish their favorite foods at the same time. I see the little cats following along behind the flock of pecking platties (makes me think of chickens!) and hopefully they are getting some crumbs. I know they do get some of the flake food that sinks unnoticed by the piggy platties, but sometimes I wonder how they survive on so little. I read somewhere a recommendation to feed the sinking wafers after lights out at night. Think they would better get the benefit of their own food that way?
