I wouldn't do it unless your community tank contains nothing but other unpaired varieties of aggressive Cichlids. Even then it might not work. Do some web-searches & reading up on the Cichlids to try & find what, if any, other fish might be compatible with a Dempsey. However, just don't buy one & dump it into your tank - you may just end up with JUST your Dempsey. No other fish, or even plants possibly, for that matter.

Jack Dempseys will eat whatever fish they can fit into their mouths, and they can maim and eventually kill fish that are too large to eat.

Well, it seems there's a blue mutation of the regular species that, for some at least, has been less agressive.

The one Blue Dempsey that I've seen is in a community tank with other small South American Cichlids. He seems quite comfortable and unlike his more aggressive cousin, is not eating everything he can fit in his mouth and killing smaller fish. No, apparently the Blue Dempsey is quite his own animal.
