Sudden death of pearl gourami

I had a beautiful female pearl gourami, almost a year old, in a community tank.
I have been promising her a boyfriend for a long time.
Today I bought a juvenile male and put him in along with a couple of other community fish.
She was interested in him while I was resting the bag to acclimatize him.
After I put him in He was curious about her but didn't harass her.
Within hours she was gulping at the surface and sitting a little sideways. Her breathing became labored. She then started to glance off the bottom of the tank.
Within four hours she was dead.
This morning she was fine. :(
What happened to my pearl???

I'm so sorry for your loss…

Just a few questions that would help a bit:

Did you QT the new fish?
What are your water parameters?
Did she have any strange behavior before?
How long has the tank been set up? Did you cycle it?

It sounds like a mystery right now, but sometimes sad things just happen. Maybe it was an internal parasite? Bacterial infections also work quickly--Did she have any abrasions or discoloration?
