small filter advice needed

I have a 10 gallon tank set up with a tank divider dividing the tank into 2/3 and 1/3. The tank has been running since December.

On one side (2/3) I have guppies and tettra on the other side I have a male betta. The filter and heater are on the larger side. I have noticed that with the divider the water on the betta side gets a slight film on the surface and I am concerned that maybe it is not filtering enough due to the divider.

I would like to put an additional small filter on the betta side of the tank to ensure that his water is just as good as on the larger side of the tank. My concern is in finding a small filter that won't add too much current to the water so that the betta is comfortable. Can you recommened any filters that would work in this situation.

I would add a small sponge filter to the Betta side.

I looked up sponge filters and found plans on how to make them and it seems easy enough to do. Does the size of the sponge have an effect on the strength of the current?

If you have the air to run one, I'll third the foam, but why mess with making what is so cheap to buy and know it will work first time out of the box?

What determines its strength is really a function of the quality of the pump. However, the bigger the sponge the larger the surface area and the more capable of braeking down wasteproducts. But for a single Betta, that isn't an issue.
