Is it swim bladder disease?

Okay, So my water finally went back to normal, it was green with no high levels. I went and bought a big facny oranda with a cap on his head. I put him in my community tank after submersing him for 20 minutes and in the last 24 four hours he has sat on the bottom twice. The first time I poked him and he didn't do it again until this morning. I was feeding and he ate a few sinking pellets then a second later did it again. I poked him again and now he seems fine. He has no problem swimming anywhere and he is eating and swimming with other fish fine. I read somewhere that a teaspoon of salt per gallon may help this. I have a hospital tank but don't really like the idea of submitting him to new water right away. Anyways, does anyone know what this is or what I should do? Can I add salt to the community tank or would this harm my other two goldfish and danio's I have? All the other fish are perfectly fine. I hate PJ"S pet centre every fish I seem to buy from there has some sort of issue. I am in Toronto does anyone know any good fish stores? Thanks.

Could just be stress. When fish are stressed they are more susceptible to disease. Fish loose some of their slime coat when being netted from abrasion and also stress will cause slime coat loss. Salt will help in this area thats why its reccomended. This is not uncommon in new fish. Hanging at the bottom is a sign of stress. Is this a coldwater community tank? Or is it mixed with tropicals? Goldfish are coldwater fish (62F-72F, or close to that) and tropicals need water temps of 74F-82. Wrong temps could add to stress.

It's a cold water tank, it's been four days and he hasn't done it again and seems fine. It must have been stress from changing tanks. Just one more question, if I notice something wrong with one fish and it may be remedied by salt, can I add it to the entire cold water community tank or should I put the fish in my hospital tank. By moving a sick fish to a new home doesn't that add added stress that is not needed. I have put Danio's into my hospital, but they are pretty hardy. I would be leary with my larger goldfish if they turn up sick. Any advice? I would really like to know more about salt treatment, not dips though. Everywhere I look tells how much and when but doesn't decipher whether I can do it to the whole community.

Salt is always a "hot topic" in aquaria. I personaly don't use salt all the time (of course unless it is a brackish aquarium). IMO it is good for the slime coat or healing wounds. Introducing new fish I will sometimes add some salt. It will block nitrite poisoning or detoxify nitrites (this is more usefull for cycling a tank with fish, which I don't o anymore). ICH treatment or getting rid of ICH. Some people believe that over using salt can make some parasites like ICH mutate into a tougher strain. I happen to believe this. As far as treatment, I would use a hospitol or QT tank for a sick fish. If the fish doesn't respond to treatment and weakens or needs a more drastic medication and ends up being QT'ed, the stress from the move would have a worse impact. I agree that it is a double edged sword, creating more stress. But, in the end its a safer practice.
