To clarify - copper wire

My concern is whether the copper itself (just under 1/8") can be harmful - the ends are not in the water though, and it otherwise won't entangle the fish or anything. Thanks

As long as it's not in the water it should be fine. If it gets into the water, as it corrodes it might release copper into the water and this will kill your fish.
