They are not Livebearers they are Cyprinids. This is only the fish family. I may be wrong but it sounds like there is some confusion that only Livebearers can mate. Actually if you have 5 or more Danios chances are they have allready mated.

Go to www.about.com and type in fish profile in the search or do a yahoo search for fish profiles.

They'll lay eggs in the media. I've never been successful at breeding them, but apparently they breed easily enough if you set it up correctly. You need the right sort of gravel medium (to allow eggs to fall through and act as a barrier so parents can't eat them)

Yes I realize some fish may lay eggs and produce fry successfully in an aquarium, but she had the danio in a livebearer net and was waiting for it to give birth.

Hi ya Northspruce.....hee hee.....bet ya knew I would be around here evenually huh.

Danios are egg layers.....actually they are egg scatterers. You will notice that the females get rather large and plump when they are full of eggs. If the danios are in a tank with something to protect the eggs from getting eaten...some may survive. How ever if your friend really wants to raise danio babies...a second tank should be set up...after the adults spawn....the adults should be removed to their original tank. The fry can be raised on micro worms, and infusoria..until they are large enough to eat newly hatch brine shrimp.....then they can be introduced to flakes and what ever else is being fed to the adults.

There will not be any fry in a livebearer net.....she may drop eggs that she will eat enthusiastically....and if she doesn't eat them....they will turn white and fungus because they won't be fertilized.

Guppies, mollies, swords, platies are the most common livebearers available in the trade......there are others but most are for more advanced aquarist.....

I have had zebra danios, leopard danios (longfin and shortfin) and pearl danios breed under my care.....
