Aquarium Algae Eaters - plec[something]

| We are attempting to learn about Aquarium Algae Eaters called plec[something]. Do you know what the name of the fish is? We've two sorts sold to us as the same fish. One has spots. The other has a mottled streaky appearance. Do you know if these are plec[something]? |

| Plecostomus Hypostomus plecostomus (known colloquially as a sucker fish) is the scientific name for a type of freshwater tropical Central and South American fish belonging to the family Loricariidae. They are large algae eaters, and to differentiate them from small algae eaters, they are often referred to as plecostomus, often abbreviated as plecos or plecs. They are extremely popular in aquaria for their ability to clean tanks by eating algae growth and dead fish. |

| The one with spots is commonly named leopard the striped is probably a zebra.Another thing I didn't see or read here is they can get very large. I have seen them four feet long or so,allthough they usually won't grow any bigger than their tank allows.Enjoy,some difficulty level with them only not much more than most of the fishes,and besides they are fun to watch and really do help clean the tank. |
