Salt water and growing crops

A friend has bought a home with a beautiful Koi pond. Each week they discharge 600 gallons of water from the pond into a side yard.

I have proposed that we plant a garden in the side tract and use the water to irrigate the crops. The only problem is that in order to helps reduce algae growth and inhibits pathogens that could sicken the fish, the owners add salt to the water. This water has a relatively high salinity, ranging from  .15% to .25%. Â

Has anyone dealt with high levels of salt in water? Can you recommend some reading material? The choices that come to mind are 1) dilute the salt water with fresh water in which case what is the maximum salinity summer vegetables can handle and 2) somehow remove or counteract the salt.

We all feel this is a big waste of water and land and would like to put them to good use. Thanks in advance for your thought.
